One of our specialties at Cooper’s Cask Coffee, our malt whiskey barrel coffee is a crowd favorite for its freshness and rich flavor. Using our grade 1 single origin coffee bean from the Sumatran sub-region Lintong, we apply our signature barrel aging process to further enhance the taste before roasting fresh.
With their notes of tropical fruit, woody earth and mild sweet tobacco, the Sumatran coffee beans perfectly complement the sweet taste of vanilla and caramel provided by the charred oak barrels. The end result—a fully natural coffee with one-of-a-kind taste and no added syrups or extracts.
Whiskey Barrel Coffee—the What, How, & Why
When you hear the words “coffee” and “whiskey” in the same sentence, you know that your morning is about to get interesting. In this case, however, we’re not talking about an Irish coffee. We’re talking about using the flavor of single malt or stout style whiskey spirits—and their rich oak of the barrels—to intensify and enhance the flavor of your coffee! You’ll still have an interesting morning, but instead of gaining a buzz you’ll get to experience your new favorite coffee—perfect for whiskey lovers everywhere.
The process of barrel aging has been around for thousands of years. People have used this process to complement the natural flavors of spirits like bourbon, whiskey, rum, wine, and more. The process is actually quite scientific, with temperature and environment playing a critical role in the process. The wood from the barrel allows vapor to pass through and oxygen to enter in, while also acting as a filter to remove any unwanted flavors.
How does this relate to coffee? Because barrel aging works the same way for coffee beans! Our whiskey barrel aged coffee takes our premium grade 1, single origin coffee beans from the Sumatran sub-region Linton in emptied whiskey barrels from Sons of Liberty Whiskey.
Why Sumatra single origin beans specifically? We’re glad you asked. Choosing the right beans is an integral part of the barrel aging process. Each of our single origin coffee beans were imported from a different part of the world. Because of factors like soil, elevation, temperature, and humidity, each of these regions have distinct traits that impact how coffee beans grow.
Add in the different processing methods, each county’s coffee will have their own complexities, flavors, notes and subtleties that impact both their aroma and taste profile. Part of our job as coffee experts is to constantly tweak and test our process to find out which beans go well with whiskey barrel coffee specifically.
Through that process, we’ve found that single origin Sumatra coffee beans provide the best match to complement the flavors and aromas left by an empty American Malt Whiskey barrel! The wet processed coffee beans absorb the tastes and aromas of the spirit, as well as the rich oak barrel, to heighten and intensify their flavor. After aging, we freshly roast them in small batches to maximize their taste profile.
When you finally take that first sip, you’ll find that notes of tropical fruit, woody earth and mild sweet tobacco of the Sumatran beans perfectly complement the sweet taste of vanilla and caramel provided by the charred oak barrels.
