Imported from Colombia, we age our grade 1 beans in an empty bourbon barrel to enhance and intensify their flavor before roasting them fresh. What results is a diverse taste profile of rustic sweetness, dark fruit notes, a hint of cocoa, and smooth bourbon finish.
Why Bourbon Barrel Coffee?
Do coffee and spirits mix? For most people, that question probably depends on who you ask (or how their day is going). In this case, we’re not talking about mixing in a shot of your preferred liquor store beverage.
We’re talking about using the flavor provided by spirits and their wooden barrels to intensify and enhance the flavor of your coffee! You won’t catch any buzz, but you will get a great tasting coffee with a unique flavor profile—perfect for bourbon lovers everywhere.
The process of barrel aging has been around for thousands of years. People have used this process to complement the natural flavors of spirits like bourbon, whiskey, rum, wine, and more. The process is actually quite scientific, with temperature and environment playing a critical role in the process. The wood from the barrel allows vapor to pass through and oxygen to enter in, while also acting as a filter to remove any unwanted flavors.
How does this relate to coffee? Because barrel aging works the same way for coffee beans! Our bourbon barrel aged coffee takes our premium grade 1, unroasted (green) Colombian single origin beans and places them in recently emptied Kentucky bourbon barrels.
Why Colombian single origin beans specifically? We’re glad you asked. Choosing the right beans is an integral part of the barrel aging process. Each of our single origin coffee beans were imported from a different part of the world. Because of factors like soil, elevation, temperature, and humidity, each of these countries distinct traits that impact how coffee beans grow.
As a result, each county’s coffee will have their own complexities, flavors, notes and subtleties that impact both their aroma and taste profile. Part of our job as coffee experts is to constantly tweak and test our process to find out which coffee origin and taste profile pair well with a particular spirit (bourbon, whiskey or rum for example).
Through that process, we’ve found that single origin Colombian coffee beans provide the best match to complement the flavors and aromas left by an empty bourbon barrel! Once the beans properly age—absorbing the tastes and aromas of the spirit, the rich oak barrel creates an intensifying flavor—we freshly roast them in small batches.
