The key to making great coffee comes down to balance, and the master roasters at Cooper’s Cask Coffee have found a perfect one. Our rum barrel aged coffee combines fresh roasted Rwanda single-origin coffee beans with our signature barrel aging process to create a uniquely rich and vibrant profile. Start by enjoying the wonderfully fresh aroma before diving into notes of the coffee’s natural dark toffee and molasses—combined with caramel sweetness and slight spiciness of the rum.
Barrel Aged Rum Coffee—Everything You Need to Know
Rum is one of the most popular drink choices among Americans, and particularly popular among Millennials and Gen-Xers. We love to have fun as much as the next person, but how much have you stopped to taste sweet, occasionally spice tones of rum? That flavor comes as a result of barrel aging, a practice thousands of years old used for enhancing the natural flavors of spirits like rum, whiskey, bourbon, wine, and more.
The process is actually quite scientific, with temperature and environment playing a critical role in the process. The wood from the barrel allows vapor to pass through and oxygen to enter in, while also acting as a filter to remove any unwanted flavors. Not only can you use this process to enhance the natural taste of your favorite rum drink, but you can also use it for coffee beans as well!
Cooper’s Cask Coffee takes the natural flavor from grade 1 Rwanda single origin coffee and ages them in used Thomas Tew Rum Barrels. Even after emptying the barrels, the flavors of the spirit remain and— along with the wooden barrels— intensify and enhance the flavor of the coffee beans!
You might wonder why we specifically use single origin Rwandan coffee beans? Well, choosing the right beans is an integral part of the barrel aging process. Each of our single origin coffee beans were imported from a different part of the world. These regions vary widely environmentally, offering distinct soils, elevations, temperatures, and humidities. The variance in these traits that impact how the coffee beans grow, how they’re harvested, and how they’re processed.
As a result, each county’s coffee will have their own complexities, flavors, notes and subtleties that impact both their aroma and taste profile. Part of our job as coffee experts is to constantly tweak and test our process to find out which beans go well with bourbon barrel coffee specifically.
Through that process, we’ve found that single origin Rwandan coffee beans provide the best match to complement the flavors and aromas left by an empty rum barrel! We find that the natural dark toffee and molasses of the coffee enhances the flavor of the rum’s caramel sweetness and slight spiciness.
Once we properly age the beans in the rum barrel—absorbing the tastes and aromas of the spirit and the rich oak barrel and intensifying their flavor—we freshly roast them in small batches to maximize their taste profile. And when you take that first sip of this medium roast, you’ll notice distinct tasting notes of caramelized sugar, red raisins, molasses, rich cocoa, baking spices, vanilla and oak.
Whether you’re a coffee purist, a bourbon enthusiast, or just want to try something new, we know you’ll love our bourbon barrel aged coffee!
